Custom Turned Wood Bowls, Platters and Hollow Forms
I learned turning from my father, a master turner who specialized in large mahogany platters. I studied turning with David Ellsworth and have taken workshops with Glenn Lucas, Al Stirt, Jimmy Clewes, Trent Bosch and Johannes Michelson. Until Last year I turned using my father’s 1900 J.G. Blount lathe. Recently I purchased a Stubby Bowl Lathe from Australia, but I can still feel my father looking over my shoulder as I work. My bowls are currently featured at Pompanoosuc Mills stores in Hanover, NH and Boston, MA.
I use local Vermont wood such as white oak, ash, spalted sugar maple, silver maple burl, cherry, hop hornbeam, black locust, walnut, elm and butternut, primarily harvested or salvaged from my and neighboring land. I turn mostly “wet” wood celebrating the natural warping and shapes that occur as the piece dries. My bowls often feature natural or bark edges, even sharp spiky surfaces that can be found once the bark has been removed from the silver maple burl. My goal is to create individual pieces of functional art that will be passed down to your children and their children.
