Steven & Carol MacLaury

Silversmithing

In 1973, when Steven and Carol MacLaury were newlyweds, they were weekend silversmiths and ceramists with day jobs in carpentry and dental assisting. Their careers morphed into Certified Dental Technicians and for the last forty-two years, working side-by-side, their creativity has been channeled into fabricating microscopically precise gold and porcelain dental restorations. Coming full circle, they are transitioning back to the artistic freedom of cast silver jewelry, utilizing the skills they have honed over the decades. Steven’s handcrafted, original designs often showcase one-of-a-kind, semiprecious stones while playing with minimalist style, negative space, and occasional whimsy. Carol draws on her intense passion for gardening and the natural world in all of her original, handcrafted designs. Their pieces are first carved in wax, then cast into Argentium Silver (.938, purer than sterling and tarnish resistant) using the lost wax process. The ancient art of lost wax casting dates to 6,000 BC, when artisans from ancient Egypt and other civilizations cast artifacts, tools, and teeth. Steven and Carol are juried members of Vermont Hand Crafters. They are also longtime members of the West River Farmers Market in Londonderry, VT, where they share their other passion of beekeeping and market their Vermont honey, handcrafted soaps, and beeswax.
